Nordea Bank Abp (Finnish: Nordea Bank Oyj), commonly called Nordea, is a European financial services group operating in Northern Europe based in Helsinki, Finland. The bank is the result of successive mergers and acquisitions of Finnish, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish banks Merita Bank, Unibank, Kreditkassen (Christiania Bank) and Nordbanken, which took place from 1997 to 2000. The largest shareholder of Nordea is the Finnish insurance company Sampo, which owns about 20% of the shares. Nordea is listed on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange, the Helsinki Stock Exchange and the Stockholm Stock Exchange.
Nordea operates in both the northern and Baltic regions, with more than 1,400 branches. The Bank is present in 20 countries and operates through branches, subsidiaries and representative offices with a full range of services, although it mainly provides services in Finland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
